Causes of symptoms according to Louise Hay

Causes of symptoms according to Louise Hay is a good place to start if you are looking for healing. Illness however mild or severe is an indicator of your emotional state, caused by your thoughts and focus.

I first came across this concept about 11 years ago when i read You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay. I found this book while in the depths of depression and it turned my life around in the next few years. In this book Louise outlines the causes of physical symptoms and the affirmations one must repeat to heal the illness.

Book cover of You Can Heal Your Life

Why it didn’t work for me: Louise Hay’s book was instrumental in helping me understand that our thoughts create our life experiences, and that the key to true happiness is self love. She focuses on loving yourself, as once you love you, everything you want will flow to you naturally. The world begins to love you. I did follow the affirmations religiously for about 5 years, and they did have positive results in my life. For example i was able to increase my deserve-ability considerably, which lead to a better paid job and better relationships.

BUT i still managed to develop an array of illnesses, which i’ve discussed in detail in my book. And the reason for these diseases in my body was the fact that i did not fully understand that our thoughts have vibrations, which attract like diseases. Louise’s book is a very good introduction into true self development, but its really a first step. If you really want to heal yourself or your life, you need to start with the basics such as You can heal your life and move up to more advanced teachings, of the Law of Attraction from Abraham.

Just reading the symptoms list struck a nerve with me. I have several health issues, most of which I’ve had for many years now, and it makes perfect sense as I read the emotions that go along with them. Healing myself has been a goal for some time – I’ve just never really known how to START that healing. I’m very interested in reading what you’ve recommended, particularly your book as well as the one from Louise Hay and I will take your recommendation to working on up to the Law of Attraction of Abraham – all have been bookmarked. Very informative post, thank you!

What a fascinating list! I’d love to have a poster of it on my wall or even printed in a pocket sized booklet. Who do I need permission from to do that?

Thank you for sharing this!!!

Hi Lennea, you can purchase the book, poster, etc. from Hay House Publishing: http://www.hayhouse.com. 🙂 What I love about Louise’s book, is that in addition to the list of symptoms and emotions/causes, there is a 3rd column with the corresponding affirmations for each one. I agree with Farnaz, You Can Heal Your Life is a great first step, and then follow it up with Abraham-Hicks to go a bit deeper. Infinite blessings to you! 🙂

What about appendix inflammation? appendicitis?

Hello Paul
I appreciate your question, i too would look through the list and not find some of my symptoms, only to be disappointed.
But this list is not complete, and while you can try and find the specific thoughts that lead to your specific symptoms, may i suggest a much easier solution?

Your body knows how to heal itself, if you stop getting in the way. This has been the hardest lesson for me to learn, but through years of trial and error i have found that as soon as i relax and start being good to myself, my body recovers.
It’s really quite difficult to dig through thoughts and figure out what has led to what. It’s far easier and more effective to pay attention to your emotions, as they tell you what thoughts you are having in any moment. As soon as you feel any negative emotion, you know your thoughts are not in alignment with your Source, and you have a chance to pick better thoughts. Your emotions in any moment are your indicator of your mental state.

Practice thinking better thoughts and hence feeling better. Your body heals very rapidly under these circumstances. Good thoughts lead to good feelings which lead to a great physical state.

You will be pleased to hear that it takes far less time for your body to heal and repair the appendix inflammation or appendicitis, than it took for this condition to begin in the first places. Chances are you had been feeling negative emotions for a long time before being diagnosed? Sometimes we numb ourselves from feeling emotions, to the point where we get comfortable with feeling bad.

How do you generally feel during the day? would you say you are mostly in a state of love/appreciation/excitement/hope or depression/anger/frustration ?

Have a look through the list of emotions and see where you spend the majority of your time:

To Kathleen regarding Hypo-thyroid. Kathleen, I have Hashimoto’s disease and find that the insult to the 5th Chakra has to do with no being able to express oneself adequately or honestly, being “hushed up”.

Thank you. Regarding my back pains and past depression, you are totaly right, these were the reasons. Once I healed the reasons the symptoms were gone. I was under pill’s therapy for few years but only after following the path you recommend I was healed. Thank you and also my soul friend Anna who still teaches me how to find and follow the spiritual light of self-love and forwards me sites like the precious yours. All the best to every human, being and nature that surround us. Keep on writing, sharing and “walking” please!

Hello Elina,
I’m so pleased to hear you have healed the emotional reasons behind your physical symptoms. My experience (which i based my book on) was the same with medicine and pills, they do very little more than offer cover up our illnesses. The power to heal is only inside you!! Self-love that’s what its all about.
Thank you for sharing your story Elina, the more people like you speak of their self healing success, the more humanity is empowered.

You have certainly renewed my desire to continue writing! 🙂

Hello. I’ve found your website as I research emotional reasons for illnesses. I’m an author & have had many ear problems over the years and have recently developed pain in my fingers, possibly arthritis. Is it your belief that EVERY condition has an emotional trigger? Can these emotional triggers be passed on through the genes, so, say, a parent who suffered an emotional crisis can pass the related symptoms to their offspring who has not been through the same crisis? This is fascinating and I want to look deeper into this concept. Thank you.

Hello Jane.
Yes i do believe that all our physical conditions have an emotional link. 100% of the time. Whether it is passed on genetically, i feel it is. I find it very hard to believe that my moms condition when she fell pregnant with me, has had no affect on my genes. Simply because i can see that her state when pregnant with my siblings resulted in a very different outcome for my brother and sister. Its obvious, my siblings have never experienced the same level of physical illness that i have experienced.
However, my emotional growth and the personal development i am going through, is rapidly helping my body and i believe my genes. I don’t believe our DNA remains the same, maybe for some people but certainly not for me.
Even if a parent passes on a bunch of awful symptoms to their kids, each child has the ability to choose what they focus on, and what thoughts feel better to them. And that is the key to resolving anything in your body. Your thoughts and hence your emotions govern your body and life, not what your mom went through 30 years ago, unless of course you choose to make it that way 🙂

Thank you for replying. Since posting I have had a kinesiology session and discovered that issues I thought I had dealt with are still bubbling away in my subconscious, affecting my health as if to say ‘we’re still here’! Nothing at all to do with my parents, as I had suspected. Now that I have accepted them, and have been given the tools to deal with them, I feel so much more empowered to help myself get well.

That’s wonderful Jane.
Taking your power back is sweet isn’t it? You suddenly realise you are no longer a victim and your success accelerates rapidly. And that’s when you can truely help other people, by showing them that they too have power 🙂

Absolutely spot on for m at present, last 6 years
Difficult divorce, lost a lot of money, he took everything , I wish him happiness!!
Fell in love with a man I could not have and had to work with him for 5 years, still trying to let go
3 family deaths in 6 weeks June/July 2014 and my elderly father 2 heart attack is in 8 months !!!
And finally made redundant 1 year ago , horrendous but where I needed to be.
After all that lot , felt like a lost soul, heartbroken ,sad, angry and broken, time is a healer.
Today right , hip, wrist pain, right little finger, and ankle pain !!!!!!!!!
Coming out of the greif now the aches and pains are the completion of letting go of all that cross.
Got a new job today and ready for new experiences .
I thanks the universe for all those experiences as it has made me who I am today and in the words of the famous Coco Chanel ” WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER ”
I am ready for a new adventure, BRING IT ON !!!!!!! XXXXXXXX

Polly you are awesome, and brave, and heading in the right direction. I wish more people had the same courage to look forward and let go of the past.
The pain in your body is just resistance. Your source is showing you the resistance, so you can work through it, and as you get happier and lift your emotional state, i promise all the aches and pains will disappear rapidly.
In my book The Alchemy of Healing, i talked about how rapidly years of illnesses disappeared. Physical conditions that took years to develop went away within months and sometimes weeks.
Best of luck with your journey, but keep us posted 🙂

This information is life changing. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing. As a nurse this just completely fascinates me. One question, if I may. I have had 2 surgeries in my left knee and I’m only 34. First hurt it kickboxing at 19. What do the knees, specifically the left knee, represent? I’m sharing this with everyone I can!

Hello NurseNicole,
You are more than welcome! I love hearing feedback. Yes my life was first changed by the work of Louise Hay, but then the changes became more rapid when i discovered the Law of Attraction.
It’s actually very difficult for anyone to pin point the exact thoughts that lead to a knee injury, but the important factor is, YOU DONT NEED TO DIG UP OLD THOUGHTS! I don’t advise it.
In order for your body to heal, you must stop the resistance you have going on, RIGHT NOW.
Your negative emotions/thoughts earlier in life lead to the first injury at 19, but your continued negative emotions lead to surgeries being necessary. Otherwise your knee would have healed and never needed operation again.

All you have to do now is work on your general emotional state and get yourself as happy as you can be. If you keep yourself in that happy state, your cells will have the energy to repair and heal. You don’t need to go back in time to figure out what caused your injury, and in fact it’s a bad idea. You will probably make your condition worse by digging up old thought patterns that no longer serve you.

Please read the following posts, as they will help you and your patients. And let me know how you go?!

Let me know how you go with these, and if you have any questions that might help your patients heal, i’m more than happy to blog about them.

Hi Kimonosa, have you paid attention to how you were feeling before the hiccups start?
I’m sure if you pay close attention, you will find some emotion (which started with negative thoughts) you were feeling well before the hiccups. And chances are, once the hiccups start, you’d feel frustrated enough to keep them going!
Next time it happens, focus on diverting your attention to something that feels better. Pet your cat/dog, go walk in nature, watch a comedy, think of a loved one etc.
Anything that makes you feel better.
Pay attention and you will figure it out!
Let me know how you go 🙂

I find this very interesting and believe in the power of thought. Is it possible to cure yourself of a disease they say is incurable? I believe that I can heal myself from this “incurable” disease, but in spite of my positive affirmations, and attitude, I find that my symptoms still come back. I really want to heal from this and often get frustrated because despite my efforts of positive thought, it will come back. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for everything you do to heal and transform lives!

Hello Alicia,
Of course you can heal, if you believe you can. It’s a tricky situation to be in, I know for sure. When I was sick, I initially looked to my Doctors for hope, and I’d then get even more frustrated when they didn’t give me any. I eventually learnt to not turn to anyone for that reassurance.
If you have been told what you have is “incurable”, it just means the medical industry have not figured it out yet (or so they say). You’re body knows how to undo what it created, and is always in a healing mode, if your negative emotions don’t get in the way.
In order to see long term results/healing, I found I needed to stay in a happy state emotionally long enough. One day here or there is not enough. You have to keep up your good emotions, as negative emotion is what gets in the way of your cells healing.
Chances are you condition took a long time to develop. You were not paying attention to how you felt, you ignored your negative feelings until your body started to break down. But the GOOD NEWS is that once the negativity is removed, your body heals very rapidly. You will get better far quicker than you got sick.
For me, it took years for my body to stiffen up, and for pain to develop in my hip, back, lungs etc. But within a matter of months of finally letting go of my resistance, the symptoms all went away. Yet anytime my feelings plummeted, it wasn’t long before the sharp pains returned. In retrospect, I appreciate all the signals my body was sending me, telling when I was headed in the right direction or not.
Your condition is just the way your body is telling you, a change is necessary.
Try to care more about yourself Alicia, love yourself! You are worthy of all the health and happiness in the world. The sad thing is, you are holding yourself away from it. It’s the biggest challenge for us all I think. None of us know how to love the most important person, ourselves. If you pay attention to how you feel, and start each day with the intention of looking for things to appreciate, your focus will slowly turn to more love and appreciation.
Have you ever done the appreciation journal? That activity alone will transform your life.
xo!

When I read your comment I feel like you want to believe that you can heal yourself, but you are not 100% convinced. I heard Abraham Hicks say that you need to be 100% convinced that you are the creator of your own reality..if you have the smallest doubt it won’t work. Don’t listen to other people’s opinion about your condition. Believe that you can and you will..

Dearest Adela,
I’m sorry you are suffering. But I believe you have the power to change your life, no matter how dire the situation looks. Often the solution is just around the corner, but we can’t take our eye away from the problem long enough to see a solution.
I need you to understand your own emotions and negative feelings lead to things going wrong, which means you have the power to turn it all around for yourself.
Have you read my book? Have you read my post on the Appreciation Journal (link below) technique from Abraham Hicks????
Your health and every other aspect of your life will improve if you let go of resistance. One of the best ways to divert your attention to good feeling thoughts is practicing appreciating daily. No matter how bad it is, you CAN and MUST find things in your life to appreciate. Appreciate the life out of everything. Do you have eyes to see with? then appreciate your eyes. Is your heart beating? Then appreciate your heart!!! Appreciate all the ways your body is working, instead of the opposite.
Go outside, walk in the park, appreciate every flower, tree, animal you see. The more you do this, the better you will feel. And the better you become at noticing GOOD instead of BAD. The point of this exercise is to give your body relief from the severe resistance you are holding onto (which starts with negative thoughts).

Please read the above posts and comment there if you have questions.
Daily practice is necessary to change your thoughts, and your life. What you will notice is as you get better at finding more to appreciate around you, your life will begin to turn in a different direction. You will feel better initially, but then the people around you become more loving. The money comes in more easily. The struggle ends. Life becomes easy, as it should be.

xo!

Dear Farnaz
I am very astonished with a problem that a friend of mine is dealing with and I am trying to help her. her daughter had a very serious bycicle fall and has lost tissue from the legs and from the arms. She is at the hospital and not recovering easily, I have researched at websites and did not find the emotional meaning of this problem so that I could healp my friend. Would you please give me some help ? Thank you very much, Adriana from Brazil.

farnaz October 27, 2015 - 10:19 am

Hello Adriana,

The quickest way to heal is through relief. What you want to do is lift the emotions of your friends daughter. How old is she?
She needs to feel better emotionally so that her body can recover. If you can (with the help of her parents), try and uplift her as much as possible. Make her laugh. Help divert her attention from the current problem (or physical condition) by putting her attention on something else. Play happy uplifting movies for her. If she is small, play games with her.

Also help your friend understand that children are always able to pick up the emotions of their mother/father. So if her parents are sad/depressed/hopeless then the child will unknowingly feel their emotions and not heal. Worrying is natural when your child is sick, but it stops you from being a positive influence for your child.
What is the emotional state of her mum/dad? are they positive? hopeful? anxious? nervous? It’s very important for the adults around the child to be positive and believe she is healthy, sick people need strong healthy people around them to be a positive force in their healing.

hi Maria,

Thanks for your question. Just to be clear, this website does not belong to Louise, it’s my website where i help people heal their bodies, using what worked for me.

If you go through the previous questions and answers i have supplied in this post, i have explained that the best way of healing is to raise your emotional state. Get happy. When you’re happy, your body has the energy it needs to heal itself. You don’t really need to “heal yourself” but more get out of the way so that your body does what it’s best at, healing and balancing itself.

Please practice the Appreciation Journal every day as that will focus you on more happy thoughts, and spend the rest of your day raising your emotional state by thinking happy thoughts.

Do you know where you are emotionally most of the time? Have a look at this scale and see the range of emotions that you have all day long. You need to keep going up emotionally or your body will not mend itself. Please see Emotional Guidance Scale from Abraham Hicks

Hello Sabrina, thanks for purchasing my book 🙂
I would love to hear your feedback.
Yes, not only will happiness heal your body, but it heals your LIFE!
But the trick is to keep up the happiness in a consistent manner. You can’t keep going through peaks and troughs (which is challenging as you will hear from my story), because the experiences you attract in your life will come in the form of highs and lows.
Then you will wonder why you are not getting consistently good results.
The best part of understanding the law of attraction is that you realise your only job is happiness. Then everything that brings you happiness is drawn to you. Money, love, health, success, joy, whatever you want. You decide how it works.
The side effect is you are no longer a victim. You never ever blame anyone for anything. You become powerful!!
😀

I’ve been studying the law of attraction for a few months and now I’m able to understand why it wasn’t working for me. My biggest challenge is to keep myself and emotions in a good mood. I’m always worried about health and money. Anyway, I promise I’ll try my best and trust in the process of life. Thank you for being part of my transformation. Humans are like angels. xoxo <3 🙂

Hi Dr Suresh,

this list is from Louise Hay and you should refer to her book You Can heal Your Life, for details of how she developed this list. I believe it is based on many years of experience and research, as well as Christian Science, but best if you refer to the original author.

Otherwise you can read or listen to the materials of Abraham Hicks which is where i started to heal my body and life.

Hi Edita, I’m sorry to hear you are in pain. I know very well what it feels like. The pain in your body is a result of the emotional state you have been in, for some time. You must change your emotions and be happier most of the time. I talk about how i achieved this in my book The Alchemy of Healing. It requires a lifestyle change, that is easier than you think. Please read it if you like, and ask me any questions that you may have. The health you want is just around the corner! xo

Hi Bill,

Clarity comes with happier states of emotions, and so the reveres is also the case. The unhappier you are most of the time, the more you lack clarity and focus. You must focus on finding happier thoughts through out your day, and aim to spend more time in a positive state emotionally. As your days begin to fill up with better feelings, your focus will return and your clarity will skyrocket, i promise!
You can’t be happy and unclear at the same time 🙂

farnaz January 5, 2016 - 12:03 am

Hi Sandy,
It sounds to be like severe emotional resistance which started when you were much younger. Obviously you know the details of your childhood better than anyone, but if i was to guess, things happened to you as a child. Humans need love and a lack of love from a parent when we most need it results in us not learning to love ourselves, which then causes massive problems the rest of our lives.
I don’t think a mantra is what you need. You need to love yourself. We all do. But you need to give yourself the love you needed growing up. It doesn’t matter what label society gives it, whether trichotillomania or self-injury, over eating, smoking, drinking or drug abuse. These are all different forms of self sabotage we humans participate in, from a place of unhappiness.
Love is the only solution. Self love that is. Don’t turn to anyone else for it. No one can give you the love you need but yourself.
If you’d like to know how i learnt to love myself and let my body heal, you can in The Alchemy of Healing.

Dear Farnaz,
I have helped many people heal their physical diseases with Louise Hay’s knowledge of mental causes of diseases . I just guide them to change their those decisions which have made them unhappy.
I want to know
1- if anyone has improved and expanded Louise Hay’s symptoms list?
2- has any scientist worked on the symptoms academically and proven them in the university?

Hello Keyvan, great questions!
I’m glad you have had success with this list. I don’t actually know if the list has been expanded or not, and what scientists have proven with regards to this list.
But generally i advise people to skip the list and get happy. That’s the fastest way to healing. And it sounds like you have found this to be true as well, by guiding your clients to less unhappiness.
🙂
I have only provided the list as a starting point. I don’t want my readers too focused on it, so i’m closing the comments in this post. It’s time to focus on the far easier path to self healing, and that is by increasing our happiness factor! Happy 2016!!!

Hello Farnaz, there is lots of positive and helpful advice here. Looking at your book recently, for some reason one sentence jumped off the page as being significant. The sentence was;
“the guilt you feel before and after eating the ice cream is splitting your energy and causing resistance, and it’s that resistance that causes your problems, not the ice cream. Stop the mental battle”. I was reminded of the wise words from the Gospel, ‘A house divided against itself cannot stand.’
All my very best wishes to everyone.

I wanted to put this thought out there, not necessarily expecting an answer. I have Cystic Fibrosis and according to Louise Hays list the disease indicates a disatisfaction with life and a poor me attitude. Me personally am the polar opposite. It is also a genetic condition so you are born with it. Can a baby have an emotional state that effects its own genetic code, is it influenced by the parents; is it passed through generations and therefore part of explanation of genetics and how it works. I am feeling very reflective ??

Are used to own her but can I can’t find it and I have been suffering with a hip issue for the past two months. Was recently diagnosed with arthritis in my hip and was told basically that I will have to just have physical therapy but it’s preventing me from living my life normally. I walk 3 to 4 miles every day which has come to a complete halt. I’m not willing to except this diagnosis. I’m very active and this is just really depressing me because I can’t walk. I read what the symptom is for hip problems and it makes a lot of sense… I’ve been struggling staying at my work and looking forward to a new journey with another career. So reading what the problem is with my hip, do you suggest an appreciation journal and just appreciating every little thing that my body does give me that is working and then the injury will dissipate??

I use to have the book but can I can’t find it and I have been suffering with a hip issue for the past two months.

Thank you for this article and list, this really hits home. This is also very helpful as it is so comprehensive! I have understood and believed in that we are entities, we are connected to each other, the surrounding world and that we are what we think and how we care for ourselves and each other. I had a mole removed from my thigh a week ago that was diagnosed as melanoma. I found out yesterday and am still in shock really, even if the diagnosis is hopeful in that it was in its early stages and even though I will have to have more flesh removed from my thigh and have my glands checked, the doctor kept on repeating how great it is that I went to get the mole checked and removed NOW rather than waited any longer! I have read somewhere that illnesses are also body’s way of cleansing itself, of pushing out the stresses and the bad energy? I am somehow wanting to believe that this is true whilst also wanting to learn how to support my body with the current situation and to help myself heal and support my immune system. Will I be learning this from your book Louise Hay?

My husband was diagnosed with MND ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) when he was 69 years old 6 years ago. The Rilutek (riluzole) did very little to help him. The medical team did even less. His decline was rapid and devastating. The psychological support from the medical center was non-existent and if it were not for totalcureherbsfoundation .c om and the sensitive cure of their herbal formula he would have been not been alive today, there was significant improvement in the first 4 weeks of usage that gave us hope that he will be alive,His doctor put him on riluzole, letting us know there was no cure until we gave try on total cure herbal supplement that cure him totally from this disease after 15 weeks of his usage. There is nothing positive about cure ALS condition except for their herbal treatment .

Yeah, but Abraham is not advanced at all. AT ALL. It’s very non logical things, such as claiming you need high vibrational to manifest, which only extremelly unexperienced manifestors believe this. Abraham is very very basic, almost as basic as The Secret.

I just did a forgiveness process which felt very powerful – all about my self excluding and not self-validating being mirrored in another’s behaviour.
I was standing as I did and afterwards my thighs were oddly really aching. I reached for my copy of Louise’s “You can heal your life” and could not find it – just to see what thighs represent…
So ended up on this interesting thread. Can anyine help,?

My father was diagnosed with ALS in the summer of 2013; His initial symptoms were quite noticeable. He first experienced weakness in his right arm and his speech and swallowing abilities were profoundly affected. We all did our best to seek help for this disease no medications they prescribe worked ,we were all scared we might lost him due to his condition, as he had been his brother’s caregiver a few years earlier for the same disease before he past. doctor recommend nuatural treatment from total cure herbal foundation for his ALS we have no choice to give a try on natural organic treatment ,this herbal cure has effectively reverse my father condition ,losing his balance which led to stumbling and falling stop after the completing the herbal supplement which include his weakness in his right arm and his speech, home remedies from totalcureherbsfoundation com is the best although their service is a little bit expensive but it worth it, they save lives.

How to Make Positive Affirmations Work For You - Metaphysical Mama February 20, 2021 - 6:53 pm

[…] My first introduction to the actual word affirmation, however, came much later, when I discovered Louise Hay and her book ‘You Can Heal Your Life.” In the 1984 book, Louise Hay spoke about her fight with Cancer. She credited her remission to positive thinking and affirmations. Like Coue before her, Louise Hay believed that your mind had the power to cure all ailments. She also believed that different ailments related to different emotional issues. For example, if you have bladder problems you may have a fear of letting go, are dealing with anxiety or you may just be “pissed off.” The common cold can be the result of mental disorientation, or just too much going on all at once. You can read more about Louise Hay’s Emotional Causes for Physical symptoms here.
