My Routine Part 1: The Morning

A lovely reader of this blog recently asked if i could share my morning routine, and i thought “Happily!”.
While my routine is always changing to match how i feel and what i need, for the past few months, it has looked something like this:

6am: My alarm goes off, and i lie in bed for about 10 min, stretching and looking forward to my day ahead. As i work 5 days a week, sometimes i think about the colleagues i like most and am likely to take out to coffee, or my hot yoga class that evening or dinner plans with a friend or…..

It’s important what you choose to focus on as soon as you wake up. It sets the scene for the rest of your day. Even if you have nothing special coming up that day, you must find something to get excited about. It could be as small as planning to take your dog for a walk, or having coffee with an old friend, or watching your favourite TV show. Whatever, just look for something to get happy about.

6:15am: I wash my mouth, and drink a cup of water with freshly squeezed lemon juice (half a lemon). At this stage I’m not hungry for breakfast so its the perfect time to hydrate my body. If you could be mindful as you drink the water, then the effects are increased. If i have lemons/limes, i will still drink water as its very cleansing. And we all know the numerous benefits of lemon juice first thing in the morning. [hyper link an article] I find it has amazing effects on my skin and is alkalising. My friend swears by it, its been her routine for about 15 years.

6:30am: Jump in the shower for a refresh. I like to list to a Rampage of Appreciation by Abraham if there is time, especially a morning one. This is currently what i enjoy [hyperlink]

6:45am: While getting dressed, i continue to think my day ahead as positively as i can.

7am: Eat breakfast (usually scrabbled free range eggs with sourdough toast).

7:30am Catch the train to work. As my commute takes about 1 hour, i fill that time with whatever i feel like at the time. I may read, listen to a podcast, listen to music (only uplifting tracks), do some focus wheels on subjects that i want to feel better about, or take my appreciation journal and write a few pages. It really depends on what feels the best at the time.

I get to work and start my day 🙂 By this time I’m usually quite happy and excited to be there. It has taken years of refocusing my energies to get to a place where i love what i do and who i do it for.

What is your routine? i would love to hear what works for other people out there?!

I think waking up intentionally at 6am really changes a morning. Before I had my daughter, I was a 10am riser (I know, whole day gone right?) but I also was out until 2am. I’ve been grappling with setting an alarm and waking up at 6am lately- before my daughter or husband is up… just to have time for myself. Thank you for sharing your morning routine 🙂 Very inspirational.

Hello Michelle,
I totally agree, the earlier the better. I must admit its a lot easier in summer, than in winter. But you get used to it. Have you been successful in waking up at 6am? I’d love to know how it changes your life. I’m hoping to be able to wake earlier, i’ve noticed more and more successful people saying they wake before 5am, and recently after watching a Ted talk on how waking up at 4:30am changes your life, i’m hoping to do the same. Here is the video How waking up every day at 4.30am can change your life 🙂

Just this year I started setting my alarm for 5:45 so I can write in my journal every morning before getting out there into the world. It’s been awesome and has really helped me get anything I’m currently focusing on unnecessarily figured out and put away so I can start the day in a lighter frame of mind and with intention. It reminds me how much positivity I have in my life. Thanks for sharing your routine!

I’ve just found this website after looking for some follow up books also after reading Louise Hays ‘Heal your Life’. I have developed a very positive outlook on life and things have started to go very well but I seem to have every ailment possible and I’m convinced I’m bringing them on myself. Hopefully your book will help x
